Should Buy
A Hand Finished
Floor?

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT OUR
HANDCRAFTED WAX OILED FLOORS?

Turgon custom floors are made with great attention to detail, using a range of traditional techniques of hand applied wax oils and stains. Our Natural Earth Range offers a deep lustre finish, while our Classic Earth Range offers a slightly softer tone.

Our wax oil finishes are tough, fully maintainable and easy to clean.

No machine finish can compare to a hand finished floor, and can never produce a finish as durable.

YOUR CHOICES IN WOOD FLOOR FINISHES

HARD WAX OIL V. LACQURS V. UV LACQUERED

Lacquer

A Lacquer forms a protective 'skin' over the wood surface, and other than cleaning regularly, it requires no maintenance. You can choose from mat, silk or gloss lacquer. Gloss is tougher than mat and it leaves a beautiful mirror finish. But not for long. If you scratch a lacquered floor, then there is nothing you can do about it, especially if you penetrate the lacquer completely and go through to the wood. This can happen quite easily with sharp stones left on shoes that people bring in to either domestic or commercial areas. A badly scratched lacquered floor looks untidy very quickly.

UV Lacquered UV Oiled

AUV curing and finishing was introduced in the 1960’s with the intention of speeding up the finishing process, and removing the need for storage, so greatly reducing the amount of time needed to hold on to goods. Finishing wood flooring with UV lights is done for the same reason, which is simply to speed up the finishing process, get it in the box, and into the home as quickly as possible. However, UV finished wooden floors cannot be maintained, nor can scratches be repaired. Once the finish begins to wear, the floor will need re sanding. They are also tend to be dull in appearance, and can never have the body or lustre of a professional hard wax oil finish.

Hard Wax Oil

Hard Wax Oils work in a completely different way. The oil part of the component sinks into the wood leaving it rich and natural looking, whilst the wax part forms a hard protective coating that, with simple maintenance, just gets better and better over time, not to mention tougher over the years. It repels water, cleans really easily, and is really simple to maintain. A hard wax oiled floor can breath, and unlike lacquer, doesn't crack, peel, flake or blister. We only ever recommend hard wax oil finishes in high traffic areas.

Wax

Waxing wooden floors is a centuries old technique, but is not the same as a modern wax oil which is much easier to apply and maintain. A pure wax will offer a traditional deep rich lustre to your wooden floor, resulting in a beautiful and elegant finish. However, it is not like a professional wax oil which is must more resliant, and the drawback is that it will need regular maintenance in order to keep it looking that way, something that not many people are prepared to do.

COPENHAGEN AIRPORT

Every day approx. 83,000 passengers walk over the wax oiled wooden floors at Copenhagen airport, The first wooden floor made from jatoba was installed at the airport in 1960, and it is in excellent condition today after 60 years of use. The secret ? Simple but regular maintenance. This could never be possible with a lacquered floor.
